When it comes to showing magic powers the Marvel films have used those massive budgets to really come up with visually amazing magic couple with very talented actors selling those scenes which could have fallen flat and looked silly. Elizabeth Olsen is the queen of selling having supernatural powers in my opinion, you FEEL the power coming out of her. The problem with most movie depictions of magic is it looks like an overlay and not part of the scene and the actors have to find some way to give it “weight” like a physical force would have. On the other end Disney’s Sleeping Beauty has the light fairy dust magic they sells pure fantasy.
LOTR (sorry Max) does a great job using spells over flashy effects and the use of various languages and top notch actors make you believe that words alone can have power to affect the physical world.
Very timely answer, Vince, at least as far as our last episode goes! I agree that Elizabeth Olsen really is convincing as a spellcaster; you can’t imagine things NOT happening when she stares and gestures. I do also like how Lotter (or whatever you kids are calling it these days) sort of organically works the magic in; no zap beams or clouds of whatever, just . . . things happening because someone willed them to happen.
Thanks again, o Master of the Mystic Penguin Arts!
