Episode 302 – Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)

Helloooo, Adventurers! Welcome back to our series “Give Me One More Chance”! Your quest today . . . is to listen to OUR quest today, which is to revisit the most recent attempt to bring the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons (a game that Mike and I MIGHT have some teeny, tiny, very slight connection to and experience with) to the silver screen. Silver? Where? Quickly, loot the bodies for silver! Wait, sorry, this is hearkening back to an earlier series. When this movie came out, I had rather muddled feelings about it (which I go into in deep, cleansing detail, which everyone will no doubt enjoy) so I was curious to see how it held up. And how did it hold up? Now, now, that’s giving away the final segment of the quest that involves a lot of team combat and fabulous treasure! Or maybe it just involves a lot of me and Mike talking. And isn’t that the greatest treasure of all? Anyway, give a listen, and if you don’t feel like it, well, nice day for fishin’, ain’t it? Hyuh!

Poll question: there have been a bunch of movies based on games, both tabletop and video. Are any of them any good? Do you have a favorite? If you don’t feel like typing, feel free to call our Poll Question Hotline at 617-398-7266 and leave us a voicemail.

  1. While I wait for the action film based on Milles Bornes starring Caroline Monroe and Sybill Danning I don’t think I will be alone in picking Clue as the best based on a game. I sort of exclude movies based on video games because they seem a genre of their own. Video games are already very visual and often cinematic while board games have a higher hill to climb to satisfy the images people playing have had in their heads with what they put on the screen.

  2. Sadly, as I understand it, “Mille Bornes: the Movie” is still stuck in turnaround. That’s Hollywood for you. Me, I’m still waiting to see “Uno: the Motion Picture.” They’re missing a golden opportunity there.
“Clue” is a great choice; Tim Curry just looks like he’s having so much fun with that great cast! Thanks, Walrus Wrangler!

  3. Just wanted, as a NON gamer, to toss my two cents in about this film. It has issues. I didn’t like Chris Pine in this. He just felt too modern and snarky to me. And too useless! He’s the protagonist? Why? He doesn’t show any real leadership qualities, he had no special abilities. Holga would have made a much better protagonist. I did like the character of Doric, but her flat, modern American voice was really off-putting to me. And a big no on Hugh Grant. I couldn’t buy that he was ever pals with Edgin. There is no “thief” or “scoundrel” about him or his character. If maybe they changed it to “boyhood friends who were parted by fate” I might buy him in this role, but otherwise, nope. That all being said, I enjoyed this film. I have a little knowledge about what bards and paladins and other creatures are (I DID just spend the weekend playing a wizard archivist), but none whatsoever about all of the lands and creatures of D&D, so I could watch the film in ignorance of canon and just go along for the ride. And I’d probably watch it again, even with Chris Pine there, because so much of the rest of it was fun.

    1. I can totally see Pine feeling out of ‘time.’ I don’t know that others weren’t also that way but he was the lead. We loved Hugh, so we’ll have to disagree. Strangely, we enjoyed it more second time around as well. Weird. Thanks for the insights, Val!
