You know who we don’t talk about enough on this podcast? Vin Diesel. Yes, that big bald heap of a man has given us some truly awe-inspiring performances, and some epic line-reads. So, on this week’s episode of “Oh No! A Giant Monster!” we are going to correct this tragic error with a show about “The Iron Giant.” While Vin-vin may only deliver around 50-odd words in this entire performance, surely they rank with his other brilliant expostulation such as “Family,” “I am Groot,” “We are Groot” and, of course, “I’ll kill you with my teacup.” Does this early Brad Bird piece of animation provide any lines with such pathos, such depth, and such an opportunity to tease out another bravura performance from Vinny-vin-vin? Give a listen and find out!

My favourite animated film has to be Disney’s Pinocchio. I love the adaptation and the animation is still amazing. I watch it every year at some point. I saw the original background painting of the opening shot which was painted in a way to make it look like that camera was going from above the rooftops to street level and then moving towards Ghepatto’s workshop in the hopping movement of Jiminy Cricket all in parallax. All in 2 with watercolour paintings. Plus the whale at the end is just beyond anything else.
That really is a prime example of the genius of Disney. Great songs, too. However I still resent the fact that the Pleasure Island/donkey-transformation scenes traumatized my innocent wee mind. Forget the whale, that was the part that scarred me! Thanks, Vince!
I have to admit, even now when I watch it, when you see Pinocchio face down dead in the water I get very upset. WTF Disney!!!
I have always maintained that way deep down, Walt Disney hated children. There’s something in just about all of the classic animated films that is guaranteed to traumatize kids!
I suppose it’s better than Kimba the White Lion where every other episode has a flashback of seeing his parents slaughtered by hunters!
