So yes, we’re closing out our “Conspiracy!” series with a true classic, the original “The Manchurian Candidate,” starring Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, but mostly starring Ol’ Even Bluer Eyes herself, Dame Angela Lansbury in a role that will surprise you. Seriously. Damn. People who’ve never even seen this movie know the term “Manchurian candidate” as a term for a political puppet or some such; that’s just how much the term has become part of the vernacular. The leads in “Valerian and 10o0 Planets” had absolutely zero chemistry and I even wondered if they were ever filmed in the same room because they seemed to have so little connection. I actually kept hoping one would die so A) the movie might end or B) another character with better chemistry would be brought in.
I had such high hopes for that movie. It LOOKED fantastic, and I loved “Fifth Element.” I’ve never read the comic series this was based on, but it lasted quite awhile. And I totally agree with you; didn’t care about either lead and didn’t think they cared about each other, either. Thanks, Vince! Hope you see a good movie soon!
