Episode 13: Real Genius

Another hidden gem for you this week! This time it’s the 1985 Val Kilmer comedy “Real Genius.”  Sort of a “What If Animal House Had Taken Place at M.I.T. or Cal Tech?” This one’s a lot of fun and one of the more quotable movies we’ve discussed, and one that asks the question “Would you be prepared if gravity reversed itself? The one thing I can’t solve is how to keep the change from falling out of my pockets.”

  1. Fun episode! Here are a couple of bits of trivia for you:

    1. “Ghostbusters” the movie is NOT taken from either “The Ghost Busters” live action series from 1975 or the animated version from 1986. However, Columbia DID pay Filmation for use of the name.

    2. “DEI” may not be an acronym, it may be the word (in several languages) for God.

    1. Interesting! I always did wonder how that “original” Ghost Busters show (starring Forrest Tucker, Larry Storch, and some guy in a gorilla costume) dealt with the Ghostbusters movie. I guess it’s nice that Filmation got a few bucks for the name . . . . not that they did much to earn it.
Good point about “DEI” being a term for god; should have remembered secret societies like Opus Dei and OH MY GOD I’VE MENTIONED THEIR NAME IN PUBLIC THEY’LL BE COMING FOR ME PLEASE SOMEONE HEL*()8!@$!#@$39=-ERKLJ……———– [SIGNAL LOST]

      1. We knew that the movie had nothing to do with either Saturday morning show; we were just fooling around. As for the DEI, it’s pretty well documented as having to do with Cal Tech, like so much else of the movie, and it being a tip to a god-like being doesn’t really make sense except for the popcorn scene. Awesome comments, though, sis!
