Episode 357 – The Evil Dead (1981)

I guess we could see this coming, as we close out our “Directors in Short Pants” series with Sam Raimi’s first work, “The Evil Dead”: Mike and I have been transformed into a pair of eldritch horrors from beyond time and space. Dang it, this is REALLY inconvenient right now. As far as I can tell, I am now Yog Maxoth, the Lint Ball at the Center of the Chaos Vortex and my unspeakable co-host, through no fault of his own, has become Mykograh, the Flatulence of the Shattered Realm. Hoo boy. Not sure how this happened, but I’m willing to bet it’s Bumpy’s fault somehow. This is gonna make our podcasts more challenging; Mykograh is our sound engineer and he hasn’t figured out how to work a keyboard with his infinite number of wickedly barbed tentacles. I’m not sure how I’m going to contribute to the show anymore, as the sound of my voices (yes, I now have eleven mouths that speak in an otherworldly atonal chorus) cause anyone who hears me speak to lose all connection with sanity and reality as their soul shatters. That’s just embarrassing for everyone involved. Seriously. Well, we’re going to try to get this all sorted out but for now, give a listen and enjoy our ell’symth ia! Ia! Shum’teth l’laandal ootr’etch! And we both mean that!

  1. I am looking forward to this next series! I am curious to see what vampire films you pick as I might have a long list of odd vampire films in my head at all times. Only Lovers Left Alive iI enjoyed and has John Hurt in it! This is Max’s chance to watch a Herzog film! His version of Nosferatu with Klaus Kinski is hypnotizing and not as depressing as one might think!

I tend to watch old classic horror but don’t find many of them scary and might classify them as monster movies over horror. to be honest. I will more likely watch a period gothic piece over a current horror and I don’t count torture porn and slasher films in this category because I don’t think they are scary but just a sign of a sick society.

For films that scared me I would say Alien, The Ring, and Carpenter’s The Thing are right up there.

For films that stayed with me long after the credits ended I put The Exorcist, The Witch, Let the right one in, Island of Lost Souls and the mist near the top of the list.

Then there are film that are horror but more over the top and weird to me are movies like Reanimator, Videodrome, Evil Dead 2 and Dawn of the Dead. I am more interested in how far they will go than if they are going to scare me.
