Episode 91: SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water (2015)

Here we are again for yet another entry in the saga that is “Drawn Apart,” the fancy and academic study of movies that have both live-action and animated characters sharing the screen and interacting with one another.  Should be getting that grant from Wottsamatta U any day now.  This week we tackle that deepest and most profound question: who, in matter of fact, does live in a pineapple under the sea? Who indeed, my friends, who indeed . . .
Yes, we’re focusing our unfocussed brains on that 20 year phenomenon of animation, following a sentient sponge who lives in the aforementioned citrus fruit with many wacky friends, going on many a whacky adventure together.  This little fellow teaches us that we can all be a bit more yellow, absorbent and porous.  And yes, this is technically the second example of the SpongeBob oeuvre but we were informed that this one has more live-action/animation interaction than the first movie.  Were we right? Did it matter? Why does a sponge need to wear pants? Give a listen and maybe, just maybe, you might learn a thing or two (spoiler: you won’t).

  1. An anecdote on the world-wide appeal of the quadrilateral-trouser’d one:

A few years back I was vacationing at a quaint farmhouse B&B high in the Austrian Alps, deep in yodeling-goatherd country. The innkeeper’s wife and daughter were out in the yard working on an Arts and Crafts Project ™ for school. When I asked what they were making, they replied with something that sounded like “Spantschbaepp” in their Austrian accent. I thought it was some character out of Tyrolean folklore, like Krampus or Perchta. But no: it was our hero Spantschbaepp Skwärpäntz

    1. I don’t even know how to respond to this. Did you get a hat? Did you take a Rikkola for this? Is it curable? Thanks, Halbwitz!

  2. Oh by the way – I didn’t see an answer on the Merch page of the website, so I’ll ask here:
When are the “Bumpy the Wonder Pony” t-shirts going to be back in stock?

    1. Hmmmm. Checking the production schedule ….. ok, I’d have to say this item should be available around the 22nd of Never As Long As I Have Breath In My Body. Somewhere around then.

      —- Max

    2. Oh! What a kind thing to ask! We will DEFINITELY look into those Bumpy t-shirts! It’s so nice to know that someone out there appreciates Bumpy’s talent and skill. Thanks so much, Herr Halbwitz!
